Content Words:

THE INTERESTING WORDS.

 

In general: words of importance and meaning

should be stressed or emphasized in speech.

 

Examples:

 

Adjectives

     gorgeous, passionate, incredible

Adverbs

     slowly, never, today

Interjections!

     Wow!  Help! No way!

Nouns

    boy, car, language, problem, idea

Verbs

     driving, decided, carry

Question words

     How, When, Where

 

 

Function Words:

THE BORING WORDS.

 

In general: grammar or structure words

should be shortened  in speech.

 

Examples:

 

Conjuctions

     and, but, however

Determiners (and Articles)

     a, the, this, those, my

Prepositions (Except in Phrasal Verbs)

     for, to, off, on, out

Pronouns

     her, him, it, them

Some Verbs

     be, have, do (helping, auxilliary, modal)
