FACE Student of the month
for June, 2022:
It was the Fall of the 2014 quarter that Clinton first came to the Fremont Adult School in a quest to earn a High School Diploma. His dedication and hard work was apparent, but the birth of his second child and all of the duties of a supportive parent put his quest on hold. During the pandemic, with time on his hands, Clinton decided it was time to get back in gear and complete his quest. Thanks to FACE's online "APEX" option Clinton was able to work at his own pace and complete his journey!
In Clinton's own words...
Thanks to the help and guidance of my teachers, Kerry Salzer and Karen Yagi, at Fremont Adult School,
I was able to obtain the pride and satisfaction of completing high school. It was unclear to me at the time what I was denying myself, my parents and those who cared about me by dropping out.I would like to also thank my wife and children for supporting me.-Clinton Oates

Nawin Taheri came from Afghanistan 8 months ago. She came during the time when there was a mass exodus from Afghanistan due to the current political and social conditions.
She enrolled in classes at Fremont Adult School and
is taking Advanced High
and Listening and Speaking classes. Nawin is amazing. She is volunteering to tutor ESL students from our school who need help with reading and writing. Most of these these students haven't yet learned how to read or write in the English language.
Nawin is very patient and helpful with the students, and assists in translating. She is making a big difference in helping improve reading and writing skills with these students. Nawin, as a volunteer, is effectively doing the job of a paraeducator from Afghanistan.

Excelling in the FACE
High School Learning Center
By Teacher Karen Yagi
The Bautista brothers, Michael and Marvin, came to Fremont Adult School to close a chapter in their lives and move forward. They both wanted to finish their high school education as teenagers, but life got in the way. Decades later, Michael found his way to FACE and finished. He encouraged his brother, Marvin, to do the same.
The day I met Marvin, I knew he had the same self-pride, motivation, and sparkling kind spirit his brother possesses. He quickly went to work and became a friend and inspiration to all the HS diploma and ABE students. He works tirelessly and finishes courses within days! He and Fremyra are in a race to get their diploma very soon!
Marvin's future is so bright! With this new diploma and his passion to make others happy, he will soar higher than an eagle! I am honored to have had a small part in the Bautista Brothers' journey. Marvin is a BEAUTIFUL PERSON, inside AND out! I can't think of a better face to represent FACE!
The High school Learning Center has a program you can succeed as well!
My Story By: Marvin Bautista...
When I decided to go back to school, I was unsure of how I would perform since it's been years since the last time I attended schooling. I was nervous. But the Staffs at Fremont Adult and Continuing Education helped and guided me to the right direction. On my first day, I met Ms. Yagi, who is my teacher, and she immediately made me feel welcomed in her class. She's been very helpful and supportive each day that I'm in class. With everyone's support from the Staff of F.A.C.E. and from my family and friends, they have given me the motivation to keep going. With the right mindset and committing to this, I believe that I will be able to overcome this challenge for a brighter future ahead of me.

OVERCOMING CHALLENGES IN A NEW ENVIRONMENT
By Doan Cuong Le
Moving to a developed country with a different culture has never been easy for anyone. Whether you are educated or uneducated, rich or poor, young or old, experienced or inexperienced, you will face many challences.
As a new immigrant living in the U.S.A. for just a few months, I am very excited and curious. My first month was wonderful. I met with a lot of friends who have lived in California for a long time. My family and I had a chance to visit San Francisco, a very exciting city with the Golden Bridge. After that memorable time, I had to come back to the fact that I needed to do something to survive in a very expensive and challenging place like California. Although I am a proficient computer user and hold a bachelor’s degree in accounting and a master’s in banking and finance from my country, finding a suitable job in the U.S seemed to be a daunting task. There are a lot of differences in culture and behaviors between the U.S. and my home country, Vietnam; the gap seemed too large to be bridged in a short time. I had to figure out my priorities, and I realized that without a driving license and English communication skills, I could not do anything in this country. I decided to make a plan to reach these goals.
I immediately started learning traffic rules and practicing behind the wheel, and finally I got the driving license after three months of effort. However, English turned out to be the hardest part because I had rarely used this language in my country. It was a problem for me to communicate with such a diverse community of people. There are not only native speakers in the Bay Area, but also people from India, China, Mexico, and many other countries.
I resolved not to give up on my goal. Fortunatelly, I have received a lot of help from dedicated teachers and enthusiastic staff at Fremont Adult and Continuing Education. It was a gift from God! I think that without this valuable help, I would not have improved my English as fast. I took five classes at the school and have been attending and studying hard everyday. I rushed into this school as if I had never studied before. When I am here, I always feel a very warm environment where a lot of people from many countries in different circumstances came to learn not only English but also many careers free of charge. I don’t know how to express my thanks to all the people who make this school such a wonderful place of learning. You wouldn’t imagine how happy I felt when my favorite teacher Yelena told me that I had been chosen to be the student of the month. I would also like to give thanks to some other teachers and staff in my school. Those are Michele, Savita, Lisa, Matthew, Teresa, Pamela, and Kerry. I appreciate all that you do for me! Finally, I am thankful to my family, especially Grandpa, Grandma, my brother and sister-in-law, and also my wife who has supported me so I could come back to school. I will do my best to study well and come up to everyone's expectations.Thank you very much,Cuong Le

FACE Special Student Volunteer
Award for July/August 2019
She was a student in Rochelle Oral's computer class for the entire 2018-2019 school year. She excelled in every aspect of the course and received certificates of completion each quarter. She completed the entire course- Computer Basics, Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and the Internet and Email.
According to Rochelle, "Anitha was also in my Friday Intermediate Communication Skills Class during the 2018-2019 school year. She was in that class for the entire school year as well and received a certificate of completion in June 2019."
Rochelle asked her if she would be interested in volunteering in her summer computer class, and Anitha agreed to do it. "She is such a wonderful volunteer. She creates new student folders in the VESL Drive, helps students get their laptops, log in/log off, and offers one on one assistance the entire time." "I never have to ask her to do anything. She takes initiative and just gets to work. She is constantly circulating around the room. She really has been a life-saver!" - Rochelle Oral
She also has taught community education classes.
Now she is in the process of becoming a para-educator in FUSD.
"I am so proud of her!"
I started my ESL program at Fremont Adult School last year. I learned a lot of things, I started at Advance Low ESL in Teacher Lisa Braley’s class, and I started learning Basic Computer classes with Teacher Rochelle. I enjoyed the class while learning Typing, Computer Vocabulary, Animations, Transition. In Fremont Adult school I finished two online courses (Burlington English and Project success). I attended College and Career Counseling Club. I attended a Community Education workshop at Fremont Adult School. I got a part-time job for Henna Art and a Glass painting Instructor.
I got a certificate for MS Word, Powerpoint, and Excel. I learned the Listening and Speaking class with Teacher Rochell. I attended career counseling from Ohlone college.
In Teacher Lisa’s class, I started writing my resume. I got a lot of friends at Fremont Adult School. Since I joined Fremont Adult School (2018 - 2019) I started speaking English confidently and I went against my stage fear and talked to the audience. Now I am volunteering to help Teacher Rochelle in the computer lab.

This is What FACE Means to Me!
By Jie-Tang Schwan
Fremont Adult School has meant many things to me, such as improving my English skills, making new friends, knowing nice and interesting teachers, and learning other important things. Fremont Adult School is extremely important to me and many others as well.
Making new friends is one of the happiest experiences I got from FACE. This is because FACE has many students who come from different countries. I have learned about various cultures from them. Also, at Fremont Adult School, the teachers are very friendly and knowledgeable. I have not only learned English, but also a lot of American culture, history, and American life.
This school offers a variety classes that fit different students and different English levels. There are important support classes, such as English labs in which students can use some programs to practice their English. One the most important features is that the labs have a teacher there. For example, Mr. Kerry, who is in the computer lab, is very nice and always willing to help you. He has a good sense of humor, and is very patient with students. It almost seems like having a private tutor. This is a significant help for our individual language problems. Finally, Fremont Adult School offers classes at different times that is obviously convenient. Many students here have full-time or part-time jobs. Therefore, students can take classes which can fit their work schedules.
There are many nice teachers at Fremont Adult School. My favorite teachers are Chris, Yelena, Grace, and Kerry. Among many things I have learned at FACE are not only American culture and history through learning the language. I have gained more knowledge about English grammar. I can read English books without checking the dictionary often. I have gained some writing skills.
I feel that English is one of the more difficult languages to learn. It only has twenty-six letters, but it is the language with the most alternate meanings. In almost all cases in English there are different rules. There are many difficulties I have had learning English. Specifically, prepositions, adverbials, word-usage, and sentence construction present my greatest difficulties.
My advice for English
In my opinion, you should:
- Come to school everyday.
- Do the homework.
- Take at least two classes if you can.
- Repeat the class that you felt was difficult the first time until you feel you have improved your English from thar class.
- Go to English computer labs. They provide great benefits.
Rainbows of FACE
By Jie-Tang Schwan
I would like to conclude by telling a short story. One late Thursday afternoon, I drove to Fremont Adult School. The parking lot was nice, empty and quiet. By that time the classes were over, so most of the students had gone home. Suddenly, the rain poured down. I had stayed in the car waiting for a break in the rain. A few minutes after it stopped raining, a surprise occurred - two rainbows appeared in the sky. One was huge, wide, with the seven colors clearly identified. They were so beautiful!
This is what it is like to come to Fremont Adult School. You come to learn English as a second language, American history and culture. You may feel frustrated from time to time, but there always are nice teachers to help you.
Moreover, you may make new friends and learn about various cultures from those who came from different countries. Ultimately, you feel happy because your English skills have reached the next level. Like seeing the rainbows, you will see that you are close to achieving your goals. This is because coming to Fremont Adult School every day will help your American dream come true.
Thank you, Jie-Tang, for being
such an excellent student!

Sathyam Patti, Student of the Month for April 2019
First of all, I am very thankful to Fremont Adult School for providing me the opportunity to learn ESL and enhance my academic career. I started learning English at Fremont Adult School in the spring of 2016. When I have first came to the USA in 2015, I was not confident in English speaking & writing. Soon after, I started my journey from ESL Core Classes to Advanced ESL Grammar & Writing classes. During this period I have attended most of the classes and courses offered by FACE - free of cost! All the teachers were very dedicated, cooperative, supportive and friendly. Regarding online courses, I have completed 29 courses in Burlington English and totally completed Project Success and Apex Learning Courses. Regarding education I strongly believe that there is no age limit or restriction. Now I am 64 years and I am still coming daily to the school to further enhance my knowledge. I can proudly say that, we will not get this type of education and teachers in any country, even if we pay money. FACE provides immigrants with a place to get education, community values and freedom that they could not get in their home countries! It is my sincere appeal to all students to grab the learning opportunities at FACE with two hands! It will definitely help you to a bright future.
Thank you, Sathyam Patti.

About Sathyam Patti
I was born and brought up in Hyderabad, the southern part of India. We have a family of six members. My father was the lone bread earning member for the entire family. Even though he was not educated and in spite of financial issues, he never ever compromised on his children’s education. My father always used to tell us, if anyone wants to excel in life, he should have commitment and dedication, and work hard.
One of the things I have learned from my father was that it wasn’t important whether you come from a rich family or not; what matters is family values, your contribution, and
efforts. Whatever I’m today, the entire credit goes to my father.
My favorite subject is Math. It is my favorite because I have never had difficulty with it and always used to get good marks in exams. Since my childhood, I have always been fascinated with numbers. Math is the study of numbers; by solving the problems one can develop their mental abilities.
Math strengthens your brain and makes you smarter in life. It will connect you with day to day
activities in Banking, Share market, Stock market, foreign exchange, etc.,
PRINCIPLES AND GOALS
In my opinion, if anyone wants to excel
in academic or work career, should have
positive principles with achievable targeted
goals and one has to work towards the
process of the same with self-confidence,
determination, and hard work to get
the desired results.
My brother advised me, not to lose
confidence and he told that there was no
age barrier for learning,it’s a continuous
process and another important point he
made was that “Nothing is impossible in life”,
and one should have trust in owns abilities,
qualities, and judgment.
I also want to quote my mother’s advice
to me that “Never ever refuse any new task
or responsibility being given to you. One has
always to be ready to accept new challenges
and try to work with
determination to get results”.
I always appreciate my wife, as being a
working woman. She has always given due
importance to family & social life along with
her busy work schedule. Here, I want to
stress one point to all the working people not
to be totally a workaholic. Try to contribute
some time to your family and social life also.

At that moment, I was not confident to move forward. I thought I was not ready to neither get a job or go to college.Soon later, I joined a job training program - Bankwork$ - which was held at Adult school, and I successfully got a banking job right after graduated from the program. From this February, I am studying in Ohlone college for English and Art classes.
