Describe your computer experience in layman's terms. You might be an expert user with high proficiency with servers, operating systems, applications and Internet use, but you should talk about your expertise in terms that someone with little knowledge about computers can understand. On the other hand, be able to speak in tech-savvy terminology so the interviewer knows you understand computer technology.
Give step-by-step instructions if you're asked to explain a complex computer process. When you're asked to explain a scenario, start with basic fundamentals about the equipment or the basic version of a software application. For example, if you're asked about your proficiency with a Microsoft Office Suite application such as Excel, talk about how the application is best used and the application's capabilities. Excel is perfect for producing spreadsheets, calculating statistics and analyzing quantitative data. Also, explain the differences between the earlier and later versions of the application, including improvements as well as drawbacks.
Talk about your computer experience in relation to your job function if the job you're interviewing for isn't a technology job. For example, if you are a registered nurse, explain how your computer experience improves your ability to provide quality patient care. Registered nurses who are proficient with healthcare management systems understand the importance of automation, technology solutions to improve patient confidentiality, and record-keeping and clinical specialties supported by technology such as telemetry nursing.
Tell the interviewer about your experience in helping others resolve challenges pertaining to computer usage. If your computer experience is extensive enough to train others, explain how your skills will be valuable to the company in terms of providing guidance to other computer users. Explain your computer experience and your ability to provide training to all levels of computer users. Provide examples of situations when you've been asked to help another computer user maximize technology functions.
